Thinking Beyond Giving: Environment, Social, and Governance Metrics for Impact Accountability in African Philanthropy and Social Investment

As the philanthropic sector in Africa evolves to meet the ever-changing complex social and developmental challenges, the imperative for transparent and accountable impact measurement has intensified. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks originally designed for the corporate and finance sectors may offer tools to enhance non-financial accountability and sustainability. However, within African philanthropy, the contextual adaptation of ESG metrics remains limited, fragmented, and often disconnected from the local systems and indigenous value frameworks.

This study critically explores the role of ESG metrics in strengthening impact accountability within African philanthropic institutions. It addresses the central question: “How can existing ESG frameworks be adapted to support more transparent, inclusive, and effective philanthropic practices in Africa?”
